vor zehn jahren veröffentlichte daptone records zum ersten mal diese zusammenstellung mit ende der 1960er jahre nur als singles erschienenen songs des new yorker duos bob & gene. das von tollen vokal-harmonien dominierte sweet soul music-album, samt titelgebender marvin gaye/tammi terrell- coverversion von �if this world were mine�, war damals schnell vergriffen und ist seitdem ein gesuchtes sammlerstück. jetzt ist es wieder erhältlich, wieder auf vinyl, jedoch remastert und um zwei nicht auf der original-version erschienenen tracks erweitert. 1967 waren die beiden teenager bobby nunn und eugene coplin die stars des in buffalo, new york ansässigen und auf lokale gospel- und soul-acts spezialisierten labels mo do records. bobby nunn veröffentlichte später soloalben auch auf motown records und arbeitete mit rick james und philip bailey zusammen.

ursa�s reef is a late 80�s traveller and surfer wandering endlessly in the secluded raves of goa, searching for his own soul while dancing in abandon to the proto-trance journeys of goa gil. brought up in sintra, portugal, by a family of uptight catholic hypocrites, ur goes rogue in his early 20�s, seduced by the esoteric teachings of levi, pessoa, crowley and israel regardie while keeping an unhealthy obsession with roxy music. he is also a fictional, made up persona - a musical heteronym - of lisbon-based dj and producer marco rodrigues, mostly known for his work under the name photonz. together with his friend jose acid - a musical heteronym of joao ervedosa aka shcuro - he makes one last trip to goa that could prove fatal.

originally released in 1979, blood a go run is a heavyweight roots reggae tune sung by obscure artist leroy brown and backed by famous soul syndicate band. this is a timeless roots rock reggae recorded and mixed at king tubbys studio in jamaica. blood ago run when you play dis ya one!

raphael ray munnings is famously known as the band leader and singer of the mighty bahamian funk legends the beginning of the end, he is also a formidable solo artist in his own right with a clutch of sought after, rare 7- singles throughout the early to late 70 s as well as numerous appearances with his band. opportunity knockin from 1972 is an early one from ray, released on tk disco s alston imprint, it s often been a rare 45 and doesn t show up very often. opportunity knockin is channelling the usual sun-soaked vibes of his later material this single is a sweet one for summertime, breezy horn infused funk with tough drums and that caribbean vibe. the b-side is also a winner, sleep on, dream on is an uptempo slice of wah wah driven soul with a serious groove and a peace-loving, ecologist theme running through ray s vocals. sublime stuff, for real fans of funk and soul rarities! nab this rare 45 of caribbean soul, re-issued here in it s original 45 rpm format with the original alston label artwork. it s been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of tk disco / alston records, miami florida, usa.

born in shreveport, louisiana, reuben bell began singing in local clubs. he first recorded for the local murco label in 1967 before moving to the silver fox and house of orange labels. in 1975 he released his first 45rpm single for alarm records (-superjock- b/w -i still have to say goodbye-) which was produced by wardell quezergue. neither side made any noise back then but 24 years later -superjock- was included in dj shadow & cut chemist s brainfreeze mix. since then it has become a classic and it has been played constantly by hip hop and funk djs all around the world. it has appeared on a handful of (mainly bootleg) compilations over the years so we are proud to present the long-overdue, fully licensed re-issue on its original format. you may check out tramp s -countdown to... soul- (tr-9067) compilation which contains -superjock- as well as some other fine rare grooves.

played by marcel vogel / it s been a while since we heard any new material from rick poppa howard, the father of prodigious house talent tevo howard. the soul and raw, off-kilter production style runs in the family, and -keep holdin on- demonstrates this perfectly with its immediate warmth and unfussy arrangement. -gimme that love- is the real gem on this record though, toying with a rubbery bassline and a touch more atmospheric detail that makes howards voice shine. that said, if you do require an instrumental version for any reason, the alternative cut stands proud on its own. for our money though, we d say howard s vocals are what makes this record special.

eddie parker cut his northern soul anthems �i�m gone� and �love you baby� indetroitin the late 60s, showing there was life after pied piper for jack ashford and lorraine chandler. intense energy, grit and soul are the hallmarks of these seminal sides.

the checkerboard squares� �double cookin�� is a byword for the northern soul all-nighters of the 70s, when hundreds of dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. our discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties. here we feature the tandels� all-girl take on a song they had previously recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure jam-cha label.

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the �hotlanta soul 4� kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on �a love like yours� were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple�s �complain to the clouds�, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

we have already released the longer version of the northern classic �gone with the wind is my love�, but this kent 45 of rita & the tiaras� masterpiece is the first time we have issued the doré single as it was originally put out. on the flip is the glorious instrumental version for lovers of that la orchestral soul sound.

�this is my chance� lay dormant until the 90s, when it was included on the ace cd �the heart of southern soul vol 3�. that series was aimed at ballad fans but art gentry�s mid-tempo gem proved ideal for the modern soul dance scene. a 12-inch promo issued at the time is now an in-demand piece of vinyl. mystery surrounds who wrote shirley brown�s �even if the signs are wrong� but this splendid, lilting soul song deserves a vinyl release.

for his first outing on rnt, parisian soul-slinger reverend p brings his signature reverent touch to a tasty edit 4 pack. the a-side comes in hot with the well-worn but ever-funky feel the heat- then finishes sweet with strong enuff, reworking an often overlooked soul burner. on the flip we have the crooning and swooning late-nite vibes of the way you get me followed by soul fire, a clever bit of edit cheekiness that s sure to turn some heads and move thembootays!

chicano soul floaters have to be one of the smaller sub genres of my disco collecting but nubia is probably the best example out there. we managed to get the master tapes from writer george rivera so it sounds as good as the day it was recording, bring some floaty sunny soul to your dancefloors â&#128,&#147, 500 only.
